Carp Fishing in Connecticut: Trophy Waters, Record & Rules

Last updated: October 31, 2026 · Written by Erni, World Classic Baits

Connecticut’s carp record fell twice in 2025, and it now stands at 58 lb. Norbert Samok caught that fish in Lake Zoar. The state’s fisheries team calls carp fishing here a “world-class fishery,” and it manages some waters just for trophy carp. This guide covers those waters, the 2026 license fees and the rules you need before you go.

The short version

  • The state record is 58 lb, from Lake Zoar in 2025.
  • Trophy Carp Waters, including the whole Connecticut River and its coves, allow one carp a day, 26 inches or shorter.
  • Elsewhere you can keep five a day, but only one over 30 inches.
  • A resident inland license costs $28 for 2026. Visitors pay $55, or $22 for three days.
  • Don’t eat carp from Lake Zoar or Lake Lillinonah. The state health department says “Do not eat” for carp from the Housatonic lakes.

Is Connecticut good for carp fishing?

Yes, and the state says so itself. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) writes that carp here “can grow to well over 40 pounds.” Its carp management page credits the “world-class fishery” for big tournaments on the Connecticut River in 2008, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019.

The fish keep getting bigger. In May 2025, Rafal Wlazo set a record with a 45.5 lb carp from Lake Lillinonah. A month later, on June 21, Norbert Samok beat it with a 58 lb fish from Lake Zoar. Both catches are in DEEP’s 2025 trophy fish summary.

One more thing sets Connecticut apart. DEEP states that “common carp are not considered to be an invasive species in Connecticut.” Since 2018, the state has managed them so there will be “very large carp for anglers to seek.”

Where are the best places to fish for carp in Connecticut?

DEEP names its own favorites. Its carp page lists the Trophy Carp Waters, “the Housatonic River and its impoundments (Lakes Lillinonah, Lake Zoar, and Lake Housatonic), Aspinook Pond, Hanover Pond, and Coventry Lake.” The table below adds what the 2026 Connecticut Angler’s Guide says about each one.

New to big rivers? DEEP’s tip is simple: many anglers “pre-bait” a spot so carp come to feed there. Our step-by-step guide on how to fish for carp shows how to set one up.

What are Connecticut’s Trophy Carp Waters?

They are waters managed for big fish. The 2026 Angler’s Guide gives them “a daily limit of 1 carp and MAXIMUM size limit of 26 inches.” Any carp over 26 inches must go back “without avoidable injury.” In other words, the big ones are catch and release.

  • Rivers: the Connecticut River and its coves, plus the Coginchaug, Farmington, Mattabesset and Salmon rivers.
  • Lakes: Batterson Park Pond and Squantz Pond.

Some sections have different rules for bowfishing. Check the guide’s entry for your stretch before you go.

Do you need a license to fish for carp in Connecticut?

Yes, from age 16. DEEP states that “Inland fishing licenses are required for anyone 16 years of age or older” fishing in the Inland District. Licenses run by calendar year and expire December 31. These are the 2026 prices.

LicensePrice (2026)
Inland, resident (18-64)$28
Inland, resident (16-17)$14
Inland, resident (65+)Free (renew every year)
Inland, non-resident$55
Inland, non-resident, three days in a row$22

Fishing the lower Connecticut River? The line between inland and marine waters on the river is the Interstate 95 bridge at Old Lyme and Old Saybrook. Upstream, an Inland or All Waters license works. Downstream, you need a Marine or All Waters license.

Want to try it free? In 2026, May 9 was Free Fishing Day, with no license needed. June 21 and August 8 were Free Fishing License Days, when anyone could get a free one-day license. DEEP had not posted 2027 dates as of 10/31/2026.

What are the carp fishing rules in Connecticut?

The species regulations and the 2026 Angler’s Guide set these rules for common carp, including mirror, leather, ghost and fantail carp.

ChummingThe guide doesn’t address it; DEEP itself describes pre-baiting
From the 2026 Connecticut Angler’s Guide and DEEP species regulations, read 10/31/2026.

Bowhunters get a bonus in some waters. There, the limit is 12 carp a day, with no more than three over 30 inches. The list includes the Connecticut River and its coves below the Arrigoni Bridge and the Housatonic River below the Derby Dam.

What about grass carp and Asian carp in Connecticut?

Connecticut has only “two carp species,” DEEP says: common carp and grass carp. State rules ban keeping live grass carp without a permit. They also ban importing or possessing live bighead, silver and black carp, under Conn. Agencies Regs. § 26-55-1.

Candlewood Lake has a special case. DEEP stocked sterile grass carp there to control an invasive plant. It now runs a removal program, and the Angler’s Guide notes that it is “only legal to fish for Grass Carp as part of this program.”

Can you eat carp from Connecticut waters?

Not from the best trophy lakes. The Department of Public Health’s 2025 fish consumption advisory says “Do not eat” for carp from Lakes Lillinonah, Zoar and Housatonic, and from the Housatonic River above Lake Lillinonah. That advice applies to everyone, and the reason is PCBs.

  • Most other fresh waters: no more than one meal a month for the high-risk group and one meal a week for everyone else.
  • Connecticut River: the 2025 advisory says one meal a month for all species except shad. The DPH advisory page adds that the high-risk group “should not eat carp caught in the Connecticut River.”

The high-risk group means pregnant women, women who could become pregnant, nursing mothers and children under six. With these rules, most Connecticut carp anglers release their fish. Our guide to carp fishing in the USA covers safe release step by step.

What bait works for carp in Connecticut?

DEEP’s own list is short: “corn, dough balls, and processed dough balls known as ‘boilies.'” Boilies “are boiled to make a tougher bait to stay on the hair-rig.” That makes them the usual pick when you target the big fish of the Trophy Carp Waters.

How do you set a Connecticut state record?

Beat 58 lb in the Harvest category, or 44.8 inches in Catch and Release. Entries go through DEEP’s Trophy Fish Award Program within 30 days of the catch. For weight, you need a print-out from a certified scale. Carp get an exception: they “may be released after being weighed on a certified scale at time of capture and observed by a witness.”
